If you want to get the very best from your hairdresser ensuring that you’ll love the results the following tips should prove useful.
Whether you’re looking for the hairdresser of your dreams or you’re fortunate enough to have already found him or her, having been a professional hairdresser for more than 30 years there are certain tips I can offer you.
1. Is Experience necessary? – It doesn’t matter too much whether the stylist you choose is a rookie and has only been practising for 3 or 4 years or if like me they have been honing their craft and skills for many years, there are certain traits and behaviours that you should expect and that you should demand. However long they have been working as a hairdresser they must be passionate, interested (especially in YOU ) and they should be great listeners.
How will you find this out before entrusting them with your precious locks? I would advise ensuring that your first visit especially, includes a consultation. Missing out on the consultation is like driving in the darkness with no headlights! The hairdresser has no idea where they are going, where you want to go or how to get there.
2. The Consultation – During the consultation, your hairdresser should present visual images, whether they be on a digital device, within magazines or tear sheets and if you take images with you they should be happy to review them with you. If they have an attitude and show displeasure because you’ve provided photographs, then you are risking your chances of hair happiness. There must be signs of them being willing to acknowledge your needs and desires. Top stylists are always willing to listen and take on board as much information as possible. If for some reason the ideas that you present won’t work with your particular hair type or they don’t suit your face shape then I would always politely advise against the wrong choice, explaining why and offering alternatives.
3. To Change or not to change – Don’t expect change unless you’re willing to change . If you want a change but don’t want any hair cut off, don’t want a fringe, don’t want layers, don’t want to change the way you style it, don’t want to change the colour then the truth is that deep down inside you really don’t want a change. Give your hairdresser some leeway.
